Kamen Rider Fourze
|Kamen Rider Fourze (仮面ライダーフォーゼ Kamen Raidā Fōze?) is a Japanese tokusatsu drama in Toei Company’s Kamen Rider Series, being the thirteenth series in the Heisei period run and the twenty-second overall. It began airing on September 4, 2011, the week following the conclusion of Kamen Rider OOO, joining Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger in the Super Hero Time lineup. Trademarks on the title were filed by Toei in April 2011 The series commemorates not only the Kamen Rider Series’ 40th anniversary but also the 50th anniversary of spaceflight, which began with Yuri Gagarin’s flight in 1961. The show’s catchphrase is “Switch on youth ’cause space on your hand!” (青春スイッチオンで宇宙キター！ Seishun suitchi on de uchū kitā!?), referencing the Fourze Driver (フォーゼドライバー Fōze Doraibā?) transformation belt which gets its various powers from devices called Astro Switches (アストロスイッチ Asutoro Suitchi?) to conjure attachments to Fourze’s limbs. As with the two previous series, the protagonist of Fourze made his debut in the annual summer film of the show’s direct predecessor, appearing in Kamen Rider OOO Wonderful: The Shogun and the 21 Core Medals.|
Amanogawa High School has become the center of strange happenings, and things only get stranger when the bad boy styled transfer student Gentaro Kisaragi attempts to make friends in his own unique way, reuniting with childhood friend and self-professed space travel otaku Yuki Jojima, all while gaining the ire of loner Kengo Utahoshi and the school’s queen bee Miu Kazashiro and her enforcer jock boyfriend Shun Daimonji, as garishly styled social butterfly JK and goth girl Tomoko Nozama watch on. When monsters called Zodiarts begin to appear on campus, Kengo and Yuki attempt to use the strange devices they have found in the Rabbit Hatch lunar base that they access through a locker on an off-limits part of campus to fight them. However, Gentaro interferes in their plans, in part due to Kengo’s body unable to handle the strains of battle, and uses the devices to transform into Kamen Rider Fourze.
The Shogun and the 21 Core Medals
The character of Gentaro Kisaragi (portrayed by Fukushi) and Kamen Rider Fourze make their debut appearance in Kamen Rider OOO’s third film Kamen Rider OOO Wonderful: The Shogun and the 21 Core Medals.
Movie War Mega Max
A crossover film between Kamen Rider OOO and Kamen Rider Fourze in the same vein as the Movie War 2010 and Movie War Core films, titled Kamen Rider × Kamen Rider Fourze & OOO: Movie War Mega Max (仮面ライダー×仮面ライダー フォーゼ＆オーズ MOVIE大戦 MEGA MAX Kamen Raidā × Kamen Raidā Fōze ando Ōzu: Mūbī Taisen Mega Makkusu?), is planned for a December 10, 2011, theatrical release in Japan. The guest star for the Fourze portion is Hello! Project member Erina Mano, who will portray Nadeshiko Misaki (美咲 撫子 Misaki Nadeshiko?) who transforms into Kamen Rider Nadeshiko (仮面ライダーなでしこ Kamen Raidā Nadeshiko?), the first schoolgirl Kamen Rider.
Kamen Rider Fourze
Kamen Rider Fourze (仮面ライダーフォーゼ Kamen Raidā Fōze?) is the primary and eponymous protagonist of the 2011-2012 Kamen Rider Series Kamen Rider Fourze. Kamen Rider Fourze’s name is meant to resemble the number 40, as Fourze serves as a 40th anniversary for the Kamen Rider Series and there are 40 different powers he can access. The series also commemorates the 50th anniversary of manned spaceflight, lending itself to Kamen Rider Fourze’s spacecraft-inspired design and arsenal.
Kamen Rider Fourze makes his debut appearance in Kamen Rider OOO Wonderful: The Shogun and the 21 Core Medals where he assists Kamen Rider OOO fight the film’s antagonist Gara and tells Kamen Rider OOO that he will befriend all Kamen Riders.
The arsenal of Kamen Rider Fourze was originally developed by the group known as the Over Space Technology Organization (外宇宙技術開発機構 Gai Uchū Gijutsu Kaihatsu Kikō?, OSTO). The OSTO developed technology that enables its user to harness a mysterious form of energy called Cosmic Energy (コズミックエナジー Kozumikku Enajī?). After Gentaro place the Fourze Driver belt with four Astro Switches in place, he turns on the Driver by pushing all four red switches, then pushes the lever on the right side of his belt, transforming him into Kamen Rider Fourze. Like his predecessors Kamen Rider Double and Kamen Rider OOO, Kamen Rider Fourze can use different combinations of abilities depending on the Astro Switches he has in the Fourze Driver, enabling him to use the various Modules attached to his four limbs, indicated by a specific symbol: a circle for the right arm, square on the left arm, an X on the right leg, and a triangle on the left leg. Depending on the specific combination, Kamen Rider Fourze transforms into one of several forms known as a States (ステイツ Suteitsu?). After transforming into Kamen Rider Fourze, Gentaro shouts “Space is Here!” (宇宙キター！ Uchū kitā!?) and says “Let’s settle this once and for all!” (タイマン張らせてもらうぜ！ Taiman harasete morau ze!?) before battle. The suit itself also doubles as a spacesuit, allowing Kamen Rider Fourze to spacewalk. It also has a hover pack, allowing Kamen Rider Fourze to hover in the air for a short distance. Mitsuaki Gamo compares Kamen Rider Fourze’s power to that of a gravitational lens, particularly on how the Kamen Rider influences both Astro Switches and Zodiarts Switches. After accepting the title of Kamen Rider, he often names his attacks with “Rider” before it.
Base States (ベースステイツ Bēsu Suteitsu?) is Kamen Rider Fourze’s standard form. The Rocket, Launcher, Drill, and Radar Switches are usually used to transform into Base States. The Limit Break finishing attack for Base States is a Rider Kick called the Rocket Drill Kick (ロケットドリルキック Roketto Doriru Kikku?). However, after he accepts the title of “Kamen Rider”, he renames it to the Rider Rocket Drill Kick (ライダーロケットドリルキック Raidā Roketto Doriru Kikku?), which uses the Rocket and Drill Modules simultaneously. A variation of this is the Rocket Drill Space Kick (ロケットドリル宇宙キック Roketto Doriru Uchū Kikku?), which is performed outside of Earth’s atmosphere from transportation of the Massigler, adding the Radar Module as well.
Elek States (エレキステイツ Ereki Suteitsu?) is Kamen Rider Fourze’s gold-colored form accessed by the Elek Switch at full power. In Elek States, Kamen Rider Fourze is able to control electricity and use the Billy The Rod. This form’s Limit Break finishing attack for Elek States is a Rider Kick called the Rider Lightning Drill Kick (ライダー電光ドリルキック Raidā Denkō Doriru Kikku?), allowing Fourze to use both the Billy The Rod and the Drill Module on his opponent, in addition to the Rider 10 Billion Volt Break. With the Billy The Rod and the Winch Module, Kamen Rider Fourze can perform the Rider Electric Shock (ライダー電気ショック Raidā Denki Shokku?). Kamen Rider Fourze is initially unable to activate Elek States during the first use of the Elek Switch, due to not being familiar with the Switch’s States-changing powers, causing its electrical abilities to backfire. After Gentaro’s experience in befriending JK, he realizes that he has to “befriend” the Elek Switch, accepting the qualities that makes it what it is, even the bad ones, enabling the transformation into Elek States without any unwanted side-effects.
Fire States (ファイヤーステイツ Faiyā Suteitsu?) is Kamen Rider Fourze’s red-colored form accessed by the Fire Switch at full power. In Fire States, Kamen Rider Fourze wields the Hee-Hackgun, which has both fire- and water-based attacks. Kamen Rider Fourze can can also absorb all fire based attacks while in Fire States into the Fire Switch, giving it more power and allowing it to release all of its stored power during its Limit Break. The ability to absorb fire was brought out due to Gentaro’s attempt to befriend Tomoko and accept her qualities.
Rocket States (ロケットステイツ Roketto Suteitsu?) is Kamen Rider Fourze’s orange-colored form accessed by the Rocket Switch Super-1, arming him with two Rocket Modules on both arms. The Limit Break finishing attack for Rocket States is a Rider Kick called the Rider Double Rocket Drill Kick (ライダーダブルロケットドリルキック Raidā Daburu Roketto Doriru Kikku?). Rocket States appears in Kamen Rider × Kamen Rider Fourze & OOO: Movie War Mega Max.
Kamen Rider Nadeshiko
Nadeshiko Misaki (美咲 撫子 Misaki Nadeshiko?) is a transfer student at AGHS whom Gentaro falls in love with. Through unknown means, she has a belt similar to the Fourze Driver that enables her to transform into Kamen Rider Nadeshiko (仮面ライダーなでしこ Kamen Raidā Nadeshiko?). Her belt is also compatible with the Astro Switches, but can only use Astro Switches for the arms. Her currently unnamed Rider Kick is based on the heel kick performed by Homare Sawa during the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup. She can also perform the Double Rider Rocket Punch (ダブルライダーロケットパンチ Daburu Raidā Roketto Panchi?) with Kamen Rider Fourze.
Nadeshiko Misaki is portrayed by Erina Mano (真野 恵里菜 Mano Erina?) of Hello! Project.
