Hamachi is a zero-configuration virtual private network (VPN) shareware application capable of establishing direct links between computers that are behind NAT firewalls without requiring reconfiguration (in most cases); in other words, it establishes a connection over the Internet that emulates the connection that would exist if the computers were connected over a local area network. Currently available as a production version for Microsoft Windows.

The current builds of Hamachi are available for the following operating systems:

  • Microsoft Windows (Windows 2000, XP, Server 2003, Vista and Windows 7 only. Due to the way that Hamachi creates the virtual network adapter, Windows 95/98/ME/NT cannot be supported)
  • Windows Mobile – beta

Prior to versions and for the Windows release,[1] many Windows Vista users had experienced compatibility and connection issues while using Hamachi. As of March 30, 2007, the software now includes Vista tweaks, which answer these OS-related problems, among other specific solutions. [2]

Server Load

Since Hamachi relies on a central server to process log in requests, at high traffic times users may not be able to access their Hamachi accounts.

QuickTime Alternative

QuickTime Alternative is a codec package for Microsoft Windows for playing QuickTime media, normally only playable by the official QuickTime software distribution from Apple Inc.[3] QuickTime Alternative consists of codec libraries extracted from the official distribution, including the official QuickTime plugin required for playing QuickTime files (.MOV and others) in web browsers such as Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox, and also includes Media Player Classic.[citation needed]

The main functional differences between the official QuickTime distribution and QuickTime Alternative from an end-user standpoint are in feature set, size, and consumption of system resources. QuickTime Alternative is a smaller package and lacks the full complement of software included in Apple QuickTime, including QuickTime Player, PictureViewer, and any QuickTime Pro features. In addition, QuickTime Alternative does not run background processes such as the mandatory QuickTime Tray Icon from the official distribution.[citation needed]

QT Lite is a smaller version of QuickTime Alternative that does not contain Media Player Classic.[4] It is maintained concurrently with QuickTime Alternative.

Real Alternative

Real Alternative is a codec pack created for playing RealMedia files on Microsoft Windows operating systems without installing RealPlayer. The pack can be used with any DirectShow-enabled media player, such as Media Player Classic, which is included as part of the package. The pack was designed by KL Software using Real Media Splitter, an open source video filter, and Real Media Codecs.[2]
